Yeast Infection In Men
Many people are under the impression that only women can get genital yeast infections. It is true that women are
more prone to yeast infections because of their physical make up but genital yeast infection in men or balanitis is not only possible but more prevalent then commonly thought.
Prolonged use of antibiotics or the use of steroid based medications, make men susceptible to an overgrowth of the Candida bacteria resulting in a yeast infection. Men who suffer from diabetes, have an impaired immune system from advanced HIV, or are undergoing cancer treatments such as chemotherapy are also at risk.
Candida overgrowth or yeast infection in men is not an STD but some studies have suggested that it is possible for men to contract genital yeast infections from unprotected sex with a partner who has vaginal yeast infection. This would be very rare so just because your partner develops a yeast infection does not mean that you will as well. It would still be wise to use a condom as a barrier during sex.
The symptoms of a Male yeast infection are not always as easily recognized as the signs of vaginal yeast infections. Typically signs would include a reddish rash, itching or burning at the tip of the penis, blisters and bumps and on occasion there may be some discharge.
So how do you treat a male yeast infection if you do develop one? There are many treatments for the visible symptoms of yeast infections. Over the Counter antifungal treatments are available that are easy to use. Usually all that is required is to apply the medication directly to the skin as directed by the product. If the yeast infection persists after the directed time period for treatment has elapsed, a doctors visit might be in order.
Men also get other types of yeast infection besides balanitis. Many of these–such as skin infections and chronic yeast infection or chronic candidiasis–go undiagnosed but are very common. The symptoms of these yeast infections in men are the same as they are in women, as are the treatments.
One point to keep in mind when dealing with yeast infection in men…treating the cause of the infection is just as vital as treating the outward symptoms. For many yeast infections become an endless cycle. They have an outbreak, they take medication (either over the Counter or by prescription) the symptoms fade as a result of the medications only to reappear later after the effects of the medication wane. As many as 95% of people, male and female who suffer from yeast infections fall into the cycle. What they fail to realize is that there is a cause for their yeast infection that goes beyond those outward symptoms—A cause that can be addressed through natural treatments—treatments that can eliminate all future outbreaks.
