Types of Yeast Infections

Candida is the common name for many different types of yeast that naturally grow with in our bodies.  Candidiasis is the yeast infection that results when our body’s natural balance becomes askew and is overgrown with Candida.  (Please read Common Causes of Yeast Infections.) These Candidal infections can appear in many different ways throughout our bodies depending on our gender, age and overall health.

What are some examples of commonly experienced Candidiasis?

  • Vaginal yeast infection (vulvovaginal candidiasis)

Vaginal yeast infection is a commonly known form of Candidiasis.  It is the second most common reason for vaginal burning, itching, and discharge. as many as 75% of women will develop a vaginal yeast infection.  High estrogen levels caused by pregnancy or hormone replacement therapy are two common causes linked to vaginal yeast infection.  In addition to vaginal burning, itching and discharge, burning or pain when you urinate or painful sex are other symptoms.

  • Thrush (Oral Candidiasis)

Thrush is a common yeast infection found in infants because of their immune system is not fully developed. If an infants mother had a vaginal yeast infection during delivery it increases the i chances of developing thrush .   Older adults can also develop thrush because they may have a weaker immune system combined with strong medications.  Characterized by thick white patches that often resemble milk curds, thrush can be very painful.

  • Paronychia (pear-ah-NIK-ee-ah).

Paronychia is an infection that develops along the edge of the fingernail or toenail. Canidia overgrowth is not the only cause of the infection.  Sometimes it is a result of bacteria but Candidiasis is a leading cause of paronychia formation.

  • Angular cheilitis (also called perlèche, cheilosis, or stomatitis)

Angular cheilitis is a condition where deep cracks and splits develop at the corners of the mouth. They may bleed when the mouth is opened and a crust may form eventually developing infection. Fungal infections are the most common, but viral or bacterial infections can also occur.

  • Intertrigo

The term Intertrigo is used to describe a rash or inflammation in the folds of the body commonly the armpits, under the breasts or the underside of the belly. These can have many causes including Canidia overgrowth.

  • Diaper Rash (Diaper Candidiasis)

Diaper rash can be caused by anything that irritates your baby’s sensitive skin. Candida overgrowth or yeast infections can be the cause or they can use the existing skin irritation as a welcoming place to incubate.

  • Balanitis

Balanitis is the inflammation of the penis.  There are a wide variety of causes for balanitis from physical trauma to infections.  Candidiasis can result as an itchy, red, spotty rash.

In addition to these are less common candidal infections

  • Systemic candidal disease

Systemic Candidal Disease is when yeast infection spreads throughout the body including the bloodstream.  In cases of Systemic candidal disease, up to 75% of people die. Normally Systemic Candidal Disease develops in patients with extremely compromised immune systems.

  • Esophageal Candidiasis

Esophageal Candidiasis is an opportunistic infection of the esophagus by Candida albicans. The disease occurs in patients in immunocompromised states, including post-chemotherapy and in AIDS. It is also known as candidal esophagitis or monilial esophagitis.

  • Chronic yeast Syndrome

Chronic Yeast Syndrome is a collection of symptoms that relate to yeast infections.  Individuals who have frequent episodes of yeast infection despite using prescription medication or OTC remedies many times are suffering from Chronic Yeast Syndrome.
