Common Causes of Yeast Infections
What are the causes of yeast infections? Candida is a common fungus or yeast that coexists in our body’s natural ecosystem. There are somewhere around 20 different kinds of Candida, the most common being Candida Albicans. Under normal circumstances, the many types of naturally occurring bacteria in our bodies control the growth of the Candida fungus. When a disruption in that balance happens Candida spread unchecked allowing an overgrowth to occur. When this happens it invades surrounding tissues and becomes an infection.
What happens to cause this disruption?
There are several factors that can lead to yeast infections.
- Antibiotics
Antibiotics are commonly used to kill dangerous bacteria in the body that make us sick but they can also cause an imbalance between bacteria and Candida. When taken antibiotics attack all bacteria creating an environment that encourages yeast infections. Antibiotics can’t differentiate between bad bacteria (that kind that makes us sick) and good bacteria (the kind that keeps us feeling healthy, like Lactobacillus acidophilus a common bacteria that keeps Candida in check.) This makes antibiotic medications one of the most prevalent causes of yeast infections.
- Steroids
Steroids are commonly used in the medical field to treat everything from arthritis to psoriasis and asthma. Many times these treatments are necessary but steroid medications can be a cause yeast infections because they weaken your immune system. If you need to take a steroid based medication, even for a brief time you also need to take steps to protect yourself from developing yeast infections.
- Hormone balance
When your body’s hormone levels are thrown out of balance it disrupts your natural immune system. This makes over growth of the Candida bacteria more prevalent and fighting off yeast infections more difficult. What can create hormone imbalances within your body?
♦Pregnancy raises the levels of estrogen in a woman’s body frequently triggering an outbreak of yeast infection. (Pregnant women should never use an OTC treatment for yeast infections with out first consulting a medical professional)
♦Hormone Therapy used to treat symptoms caused by the changing hormone levels that occur before and after menopause. These can include Birth control pills containing estrogen and progestin, Hormone replacement therapy (HRT), Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT)
♦Contraceptives that change your hormone levels. Some women find that they get a yeast infection once a month when they’re on the pill.
♦Obesity and some underlying illnesses, like diabetes is often an overlooked cause of yeast infections . Obesity can cause insulin resistance, making the body produce more and more of this hormone to maintain a healthy blood sugar level. Changes in hormone levels can set up the right environment for yeast infections. The hormone changes also create a significant risk factor for the development of adult diabetes, making chronic yeast infections one of the first signs of diabetes.
- Weakened Immune System
Some serious illnesses can also increase the occurrences of yeast infection out breaks. These would include HIV, some auto-immune disorders and anyone receiving cancer treatments. Candida outbreak is the leading cause of esophagitis (inflammation in the throat) in people suffering from AIDS. In others candidal infections can occur through out the entire body most frequently the blood, brain, eye, kidney and heart.
Once these outside influences have affected your body’s balance of Candida, common yeast infections are likely to occur. The symptoms of these infections can be treated by many over the counter medications or prescriptions from your family doctor. There are also natural remedies available that will not only help with visible symptoms but also help to return the delicate balances within your body.
