Candidiasis, Candida, Candida albicans are words that most of us are not familiar with.  Candidiasis in its many variations is a common plague in today’s society. Untreated it can escalate to chronic yeast infection.  It has been estimated that nearly 75% of all Americans suffer from Candidiasis. Unfortunately as many as 90% of those afflicted do not realize what they are suffering from. Others only treat symptoms instead of treating the condition at its source. Even though there are natural ways to prevent and cure Candidiasis, very few individuals take basics steps to prevent their bodies from an outbreak of candidiasis.

So what is Candidiasis? (Candidiasis is pronounced Can-dih-di’-a-sis.) To answer that question we first have to talk about Candida.  This is naturally occurring yeast that is present in controlled amounts in the mouth and on other mucous membranes in the human body.

Usually Candida causes no harm; it’s just another small part of our body’s very complex internal ecosystem. In fact there are more then twenty different species of yeast identified as Candida, the most common being Candida albicans.  In addition to these, there are also many types of bacteria in your body that normally control the growth of Candida.

On occasion fungal growth exceeds the body’s ability to control it. In other words, the naturally occurring yeast out number what the body’s natural bacteria can neutralize.  The result—Candidiasis or what is commonly known as yeast infection.

Typically this yeast infection will occur in warm moist areas of the body.  In babies that would include the mouth (thrush) and diaper area.  In elderly adults oral yeast infections also become more common developing on the tongue, cheeks, lips and around dentures. Adults can have yeast infections under the breast and lower abdomen, nail beds, beneath skin folds and genital areas.

Normally the symptoms of yeast infections are uncomfortable but superficial and can be cleared up in just a few days. In many cases this can be done naturally by following simple steps or by basic diet changes.   In rare cases, especially when a person is suffering from a weakened immune system, the yeast infection may spread through out the entire body.  In these instances of systemic candidal disease, up to 75% of people may die.

People with low immune systems due to advanced HIV, leukemia, and diabetes are susceptible to critical yeast infections.  But even common cases of yeast infection can escalate into more critical illness.  One reason for this is that treating yeast infections symptoms instead of its source leads to situations where the infection is resistant to conventional medical treatment.
